This space displays different documents available in the Media Library of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
The Media Library integrates historical and current photographic and film archives produced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, as well as donated private collections, and seeks to facilitate their reuse. These archives constitute a valuable documentary heritage of particular interest in our current image-driven society for understanding the evolution of agriculture, the environment, and rural society.
The Media Library's film collection includes almost 400 documentaries, nearly half of which were produced by MAPA between 1914 and 1981. As for the available photographs, they date from the beginning of the 20th century until 1980.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Ministry of Agriculture has made a significant contribution to the genre of agricultural documentary films, which are of interest for understanding the evolution of agriculture, fishing, rural society, the environment, and the various policies of the Ministry. The Media Library, in collaboration with the Spanish Film Archive and the Autonomous Communities, has digitized, restored, and made this documentary film heritage available within the Knowledge Platform for Rural and Fishing Sectors.
Jesús Francisco González de la Riva y Vidiella, Marquis of Villa-Alcázar, was born in Cádiz in 1885 and died in Madrid on September 8, 1967. He studied Agricultural Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. From 1934 to 1967, he directed the entire production process of 70 documentaries of great educational value, influenced by the prevailing ideology regarding various agricultural, livestock, and forestry products.
His foresight regarding the importance of cinematography as an educational and informative genre, his professionalism, dedication and technical knowledge of directing, screenwriting, music, voice-over, photography and animation fostered the most fruitful stage of the Ministry of Agriculture's own film production.
