The National Institute of Statistics (INE) is an autonomous administrative body with its own legal personality and assets, attached to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through the State Secretariat for the Economy and Business Support. It is governed primarily by Law 12/1989 of May 9, on the Public Statistical Function (LFEP) (amended in the Official State Gazette [BOE] on July 8, 2022), which regulates statistical activity for state purposes, an area of exclusive state competence, and by the Statute approved by Royal Decree 803/2022 of October 4. The Law assigns the National Institute of Statistics a prominent role in public statistical activity, expressly entrusting it with carrying out large-scale statistical operations (demographic and economic censuses, national accounts, demographic and social statistics, economic and social indicators, coordination and maintenance of business directories, compilation of the Electoral Register, etc.).
