The historical demographic process by which a population transitions from an old demographic regime characterized by high birth and death rates to a modern demographic regime with very low rates of both. In this process, death rates, both ordinary and extraordinary, are first brought under control, followed by birth rates, resulting in high population growth between these two periods.
