Climate change is a variation in the elements of Earth's climate that can have both natural and human causes. Earth's climate has been inherently changeable since its origins. Astronomical, atmospheric, and geographical factors explain the cycles and phases through which the Earth's climate has passed until the mid-19th century. Since then, emissions of gases from fossil fuels have altered the planet's energy balance, forcing a warming process that manifests as a rise in temperature. Changes in Earth's climate are reflected in modifications to the functioning of climatic parameters such as temperature, precipitation, winds, cloud cover, etc. They also involve alterations in atmospheric circulation and the abnormal development of extreme weather events. Other effects of climate change include alterations in sea level, changes in ocean surface temperatures, fluctuations in the planet's ice masses, modifications in ecosystems, and alterations in food production.
