DANA (Cold Drop)

A pocket of cold air surrounded by warmer air, caused by a deep wave in the polar jet stream, eventually breaks away and moves towards warmer latitudes. The acronym DANA stands for "Isolated Depression at High Levels." It generates significant instability, with intense showers and severe thunderstorms, especially if the surface air is very warm and humid. In Spain, this situation is characteristic of autumn and particularly affects the Mediterranean coast, the Cantabrian coast, and the southwest or south of the Iberian Peninsula.
