European Union

A supranational economic and political organization comprised of 27 European countries, it is the successor to the European Economic Community (EEC), the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM). Founded in 1957 through the Treaty of Rome, its initial objectives have since expanded to include monetary unification (the euro) and the free movement of people and goods.
