Failure

A crack or fracture in the ground, with displacement between the fractured rock blocks. If the displacement is vertical, resulting in one block being uplifted and another sinking, it is called a vertical, normal, or reverse fault; if the displacement of the blocks is horizontal, it is a strike-slip fault. This gives rise to Germanic-type (faulted) landforms.
