Angular distance between the parallel passing through a point and the Equator. Being an angle, it is measured in degrees, with values ranging from 0° (Equator) to 90° (poles) north or south (north and south latitude). Each degree is divided into 60 minutes, and each minute into 60 seconds. Together with longitude, they form the two geographic coordinates necessary to locate a point on the Earth's surface. For example, the latitude of Alicante is 38° 20' 43'' N, and that of Cape Town (South Africa) is 33° 55' 30'' S.
