The Spanish administrative division originated in 1833 and is enshrined in the current Spanish Constitution of 1978 as a local entity formed by the grouping of municipalities. It is managed by the Provincial Council, except in the island provinces, where the administrative level is covered by the Island Councils (Canary Islands) or Island Councils (Balearic Islands), as well as in single-province Autonomous Communities, where these functions are carried out by the Autonomous Community itself.
