Runoff

The movement of rainwater or snowmelt across the Earth's surface (surface runoff) or underground. Initially, runoff is generally diffuse, forming a sheet of water or numerous rivulets that constantly change course. Gradually, the water becomes channeled and flows through a bed, forming streams or rivers. Diffuse runoff is one of the main causes of erosion in areas with little agriculture and on poorly permeable soils.
