The United States Bureau of Reclamation is best known for the dams, power plants, and canals it built across 17 western states. These water projects spurred settlement and fostered economic development in the western United States. The agency has constructed more than 600 dams and reservoirs, including the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River and the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River. Today, it is the nation's largest water wholesaler.
