Special Protection Areas for Birds (SPAs) are a portion of land necessary to preserve, maintain, or restore sufficient habitat diversity and area for all bird species listed in Annex I of Directive 2009/147/EC of 30 November 2009 on the conservation of wild birds. These, together with Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), make up the Natura 2000 network.
